"Lourdes" Dining Chair by Michael Clyde
Made to order by Ravenna local and craftsman Michael Clyde. Clyde hand crafts every aspect of his chairs in his workshop. His design is classic, timeless, and built to last over 100 years.
The "Lourdes" Chair takes its name from the family member he originally designed them for. Hand-made out of locally sourced maple and able to be stained naturally, dark, or painted to your preference.
Current time to complete a set of 6: 6 Months
From Clyde:
The Lourdes stick chair was designed in collaboration with a client who was interested in a simple, black, rectilinear chair that still emphasizes the wood that is used in its construction. I incorporated simple tapered, octagonal strut legs, a fully carved seat, and a crest that’s shaped to compliment the seat.
The double-board seat is 17” x 16”, to accommodate seating at a dining table. The red oak seat is carved out with an adze, scorp and travisher to a ⅞” depth. Then the edges on the underside of the seat are all beveled, to create the illusion of a thinner seat.
The legs and spindles are big leaf maple or black locust and have dead-straight grain for strength. The leg tenons are larger than normal to make the joints more durable. All the leg tenons and spindles in the chair are glued with animal glue (which is reversible for repairs) and wedged with laburnum. The big leaf maple, steam bent crest is pinned with dowels to the spindles in order to increase durability.
The chair is set up for all-around use, and is comfortable for dining. The seat is 18” high (measured from the pommel). I am happy to size or cut the legs down to accommodate shorter sitters.
All the parts are shaped and fitted using hand tools. That means the surfaces are smooth where they contact the body and a bit coarse on the underside. This is how these chairs were historically made, and it would be odd to sand the secondary surfaces to a mirror.
The chair is finished with Linseed oil paint and a coat of linseed oil wax, which is an environmentally friendly finish.
